Mark Zuckerberg to Build $400m Town for Facebook Employees
FaceTown
In ye olden times having a specific town to create a living space for employees was common. Numerous towns in Wales like Ebbw Vale and Blaenavon were built for that purpose and more recently numerous big industrial firms have built towns to accommodate their vast workforces. Alberta in Michigan was founded by Henry Ford, Celebration, Florida was built for Disney workers, and Toyota even went so far as to rename an entire city after their company, following a massive influx of their staff.archdaily.net |
This might be a sign of just how fiercely competitive the biggest social media firms are becoming, especially in relation to retaining the most talented programmers and designers. Facebook have unveiled plans to build a company town near their base in Silicon Valley in California. The $400m undertaking will include housing, shops and a hotel across a 56-acre plot. Supposedly the town will offer unlimited free food to employees, among other perks, but housing will be freely available to the general public as well (but, you know, for money).
On the flipside, such an undertaking probably won’t help the soaring house prices in Silicon Valley and the rest of Palo Alto. A 2 bedroom in that area will cost you upwards of $1m, staggeringly. This kind of employment/lifestyle synergy doesn't usually bode well for affordability. Apple have a fairly sizable crop of land in the area, too.
The Facebook staff are also currently in the process of moving into a new headquarters, designed by none other than Frank Gehry. Construction on this ‘Facebook town’ won’t begin for some time, but the advanced employment packages they will be able to offer once it’s complete will mean that the most talented programmers and web designers in the game will have all the more reason to start plying their trade to the big F.
