World Emoji Day: 38 New Emojis Coming in 2016

Earlier in the year, Unicode unveiled the next round of new
emojis which will include a shark, bacon, and a selfie. They are described in
detail on the Unicode website, along with proposed graphics for each. They won’t
be available until next year, and then it will be up to companies like Apple
and Google to design them and incorporate them into their emoji keyboards.

The new emojis were chosen based on requests made by the
public, the number of Google searches, and the cultural significance of the object.
Apple previously updated their emoji keyboard in order to reflect more human
diversity, allowing the option to choose between 5 different new skin tones and
same-sex couples.

Last year, New York couple Alex Goldmark and Liza Stark wanted
to see what would happen if they communicated using only emojis in their texts
for a month. Unsurprisingly, things got lost in translation. In the conversation below, for example, Liza is telling Alex that she won’t meet him tonight because a
friend just had a death in the family, and it isn't easy to follow. Alex told Buzzfeed that he found himself
more willing to send cheesy messages because it only took the tap of a button.
