Snapchat Implement AR and 3D Pinnable Stickers
I've never just stopped and thought, "What does Snapchat need? I know, stickers that move!" Yet that's exactly what Snapchat has installed and it's actually really fun. If you can get the hang of it that is. Once you have you can make these amazing little videos that really are completely your own.
There's a wide selection of stickers to choose from organised into categories for easy hunting. There are some things I wish there were more of like dog stickers as well as cat ones but generally you should be able to find something you want to play around with. You could turn someone into Santa or the Devil, or add thought clouds above their head, to name just a few. No matter what you do this is encouraging creativity within their teenage user base and it seems like a good idea to me.
So how have they done it? That we cannot be sure of but Snapchat did recently poach Eitan Pilipski, former VP of engineering at AR company Vuforia, who undoubtedly played a part. In the past their company had used VR for everything from showing people how items could look in their home to showing directions that pop up in your vision as you drive. All these things need to stick to the scenery and that is exactly what these stickers do. I doubt this is the only thing that Snapchat are going to do with this new technology as there's so much they could do. They already have animated lenses that can alter your appearance and now stickers that move with the video. They could do anything from upping what the lenses can do to having them not just focus on selfies.
Without a doubt this is something that other video apps like Facebook-owned MSQRD are going to want to try emulating. However without the know how they might not be able to get anything out before Snapchat release something new. Facebook might be trying to push video but Snapchat still does it better, only in a totally different way. Snapchat clearly have a good handle on AR that most other video companies don't seem to have managed yet and with Pilipski on staff it is bound to improve even more.
I'm totally going to encourage Snapchat users to go and have a play with this now. Hopefully you'll find this is a fun way to release your creative side.
