Facebook is Launching a “Social Calling” Service
Facebook are joining up with Orange network to provide a “social calling” service which will allow friends to call one another without knowing each other’s numbers.
French carrier Orange have announced that they will offer “Party Call” which will be available on both desktop and mobile versions of Facebook. Users will be able to call one another and make “group calls” using Facebook connections without having to know their mobile numbers to do so.
The “Party Call” feature was described by Orange as: “A partnership with Facebook, to introduce more communication tools into social networks, with a first public teleconference service coming in summer 2013.”
Facebook’s open API is being utilised by Orange to fuse the service with the social platform’s social graph. Friends will therefore be able to invite others, place information of the call to Facebook, and more.
A Facebook spokesperson said: “By connecting its Party Call service to Facebook, Orange will be able to offer customers a truly personal experience. It is a great example of how companies can use Facebook’s open developer platform to make their products social. We are really happy that Facebook is transforming telecoms just as it has gaming, music, video and numerous other online services.”
The operation will be powered by Orange’s IP-based call app Libon which is effectively already a competitor for Skype. The service is believed to become active in France during the summer of 2013.
It’s still unclear as to when the transition to the rest of Europe may happen or whether Facebook hopes to roll out the service to the UK anytime soon.
