New Nokia Asha Models Feature Facebook Button
Nokia is about to release two models of the low cost Asha, the 205 and the 205 Dual-SIM, with a Facebook button integrated into the qwerty keyboard.
Most of Nokia’s recent advertising has been focused on promoting the Microsoft-powered Lumia range, but the cheaper Asha range is actually far more successful: 2.9 million Lumia phones were sold in Nokia’s fiscal third quarter, compared to 6.5 million touch screen Asha phones.
Neil Broadley, Nokia’s Mobile Phones Marketing Director, told TechCrunch that the button is “very much something […] developed in partnership with Facebook. It’s been a joint collaboration throughout”.
The integrated Facebook button is just one of a number of features designed to make the 205 more social: both variants are sold with a preloaded Twitter client, as well as the new Slam technology, which allows instant data transfer between two phones in the same vicinity.
Although this is Nokia’s first phone to come with a Facebook button, HTC, Vodafone and Orange have all previously released phones with the feature. The release of the HTC’s ChaCha and Salsa models was even accompanied by a Mark Zuckerberg video message.
The Asha 205, which is due for release in the US before Christmas, will cost around $62. The Dual-SIM version, which has two SIM card slots, will cost slightly more. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
