Pinterest Creates News Feature For Advanced Content Discovery
Pinterest has installed a ‘News’ tool to replace the activity feed. The ‘News’ feed shows boards that reveal where recent images have been repinned.
This feed will create content that could be relevant as users search for images via their own profiles or whilst on other user’s profiles.
Pinterest’s help centre claims that ‘News’ will advance content discovery for the social platform. “To make relevant and interesting content easier to find, we are introducing News . . . We think this will help pinners like you find more relevant boards and pins more easily.”
Users of the site are able to access ‘News’ from two different places while on the site. A preview of ‘News’ can be found in the left-hand column of the homepage, or while on any user profile, it can be found next to the follower count.
The mobile app of Pinterest already gives users the ability to access a ‘News’ tab. However, this feed only displays repins and doesn’t lead users of the app to other related boards and potential pins. The mobile app also does not provide a ‘News’ option while on a mobile profile.
If a user still wants to find information which would normally be found in the activity feed (e.g. new followers and likes), they can alter the notification settings so that this information will be sent via email.
Some users of the site began to receive the News feature on January 16th. It’s believed that this feature will gradually be rolled out to all users “over the next few weeks” according to the company.
What do you make of the new ‘News’ feature?
