YouTube Soon To Introduce Paid Subscriptions
In an effort to attract more advertisers and content creators to the site, YouTube will begin asking viewers to pay for certain channels.American magazine AdAge has published an article revealing that YouTube has begun inviting developers to submit ideas for monthly subscription channels.
The first paid-for channels will cost between $1 and $5 per month for subscribers, with the added possibility of pay-per-view services if they want to watch archived videos.
AdAge expect that YouTube will first offer the subscribed channels option to paid developers who already have a large audience, such as Machinima, Fullscreen and Maker Studios, but that they will also accept submissions from developers who have not partnered with YouTube before.
Last year, at an AllThingsD media conference, YouTube CEO Salar Kamangar admitted that subscriptions were a strong possibility.
"If we have a subscription model," Kamangar said at the conference, "then absolutely that's something that becomes possible."
"We have long maintained that different content requires different types of payment models," said a Google spokesperson in a statement sent to TechRadar concerning the proposed subscription service.
"The important thing is that, regardless of the model, our creators succeed on the platform. There are a lot of our content creators that think they would benefit from subscriptions, so we're looking at that."
At the moment, subscribed channels are only an “experiment”, but if they prove to be a success with developers and users, they could be the future of monetizing online video streaming.
