Social Media Promotions Of The Week: 29/03/2013
Unusually, there is only one video in this week’s SMPW article, and it’s not even a promotion. Nevertheless, there are some really brilliant and original social media promotions running this week. Hopefully, the five I have chosen will give you some ideas on how to promote your own business.
1. BrewDog – #Mashtag
This week, innovative Scottish brewers BrewDog are creating the first ever Twitter crowd-sourced beer recipe. Every day, a new element of the beer has been chosen by the Twitter public using the hashtag #Mashtag.
On Monday, it was decided that the beer would be a brown ale. On Tuesday, the ABV was set at 7.5% – the percentage of an American brown ale. On Wednesday, New Zealand hops were selected instead of American or British. On Thursday, the special twist was decided (as I’m writing this on Thursday, I don’t know the result I’m afraid). On Friday, the beer’s name is to be decided.
If you want the final result, which will be announced on Friday evening, go to the BrewDog blog. Personally, I’m very excited to see what happens in this clever and revolutionary social media brewing promotion.
2. Tesco – #FindTheEggs
Superstore Tesco has created an online Easter egg hunt using Google Maps, challenging the public to search out and collect three eggs of thousands that have been secreted all around the virtual countryside.
After finding three eggs, searchers are awarded with a chocolaty prize via a printable voucher that can be used in Tesco stores.
The campaign has already been widely shared thanks to the use of a hashtag in the title.
3. Red Bull – Red Bull Editions
Energy drink manufacturers Red Bull have hired We Are Social to create an Instagram gallery to celebrate the release of their new Red Bull Editions flavours.
Fans of the drinks are asked to send in colour-themed photographs using the hashtags #rededitionplease, #silvereditionplease and #blueeditionplease, as well as the handle @redbulluk, to enter their photos.
A team of judges will be asked to select their favourite photos, as well as posting their own, in each category: Red Blue red (cranberry), Red Bull silver (lime), and Red Bull blue (blueberry).
4. The Wolverine – Vine Teaser Trailer
James Mangold, director of upcoming Hugh Jackman film The Wolverine, has released a six-second teaser using Twitter affiliate Vine.
Mangold dubbed the Vine teaser a “tweaser” in his tweet, but followed it up with another tweet saying that frustratingly the tweaser was mistimed, as a full 2 minute teaser was to be released a day after (posted above).Despite the poor timing, Mangold’s Vine tweaser is a novel use of the video sharing service.
5. Regis Salon – Regis Salon Website
Hairdressers Regis Salons have created a new website which incorporates social media updates from the company’s Twitter and Facebook profiles into a Windows phone-like panels display.
The site will also feature style blogs, staff profiles and inspiration pages. Jenny Smith, Regis UK’s marketing manager, told marketing site The Drum:
“We want Regis Salons to be at the forefront of the salon industry with regards to our knowledge, talent and service. The success of our social channels to date has shown us the high demand for brand-related content that highlights our personality and expertise as a company, so bringing it together on one website was a logical progression.”
