Social Media Promotions Of The Week: 19/04/2013
It’s been a quiet week for social media promotions, but not for social media: Twitter announced #music yesterday, Foursquare celebrated #4sqDay and Facebook began testing new link posts in the redesigned timeline. There have, however, been five quality promotions released over the past few days, proving that quality should be valued over quantity every time.
1. Kids Company
This may not specifically be a promotion, but it is an example of how a charity can use the new Vine app to great effect and ensure a wide audience.
Children’s charity Kids Company has released a series of vines depicting the horrific conditions that some children are living in. The six vines each contain a “before” and “after” clip, the first showing the problem, the second a solution. There are three subjects explored in the series: extreme poverty, childhood hunger and neglect.
The Vine videos each display a number so that people can donate by text. A text unlocks a video showing the children in a safe environment.
Go to Kids Company’s home page to see the vines or for more information about the charity.
2. Dove – Real Beauty Sketches
Dove’s new 3 minute long YouTube advertisement challenges us to think about the way we perceive ourselves.
In this ingenious video, women are asked to describe themselves to an FBI-trained forensic sketch artist, who then draws what they describe. At no point does he see them face-to-face. Afterwards, a person who has only just met the subject of each sketch is asked to describe them to the sketch artist, again he sketches the description. The two sketches are then displayed next to each other so that the subject can see for themselves.
Beneath the video, Dove has written: "Women are their own worst beauty critics. Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful [...] we decided to conduct a compelling social experiment that explores how women view their own beauty in contrast to what others see."
The results of the test are remarkable, so it is no surprise that the video has attained almost 9 million views.
3. Warburtons – All Ends Loaf
Bakers Warburtons received so much positive feedback after advertising an all ends loaf on April Fools Day that they have decided to create a number of the loaves on a limited edition basis.
A picture of the loaf, which comprises only the ends of a Warburtons Toastie loaf, was posted on the Warburtons Facebook page on the first day of the month. It generated over 1000 likes and hundreds of comments.
To thank their following, Warburtons gave 20 of the loaves away to lucky Facebook fans.
4. Evian – Baby and Me
French bottled water company Evian are renowned for their playful “live young” commercials, the most popular of which can be seen above.
This week, Evian announced that they would be releasing their next advert, “Baby and Me” to their social media fans at 4pm today, two days before it is released globally on Sunday.
Furthermore, Evian UK followers on Twitter who retweet the advert will be entered into a draw to win tickets to the BAFTA Television awards.
5. Facebook – Facebook Home
To advertise the release of Facebook Home, Facebook has released a number of adverts on YouTube. The one above, my personal favourite, features Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg!
