Social Media Promotions Of The Week: 05/07/13

Everyone must have been engrossed in Wimbledon this week, because it's been a slow week for social media promotions. I'm afraid I only managed to find three from the week, so I added one that I recently found from last month which deserves a mention, and then added another which, though not actually a promotion, is really cool.

1. Tesco Mobile – #nojoke 




Tesco’s #nojoke competition is now over, but it was a great success for the company. Tesco promised to reward 10 Tesco Mobile customers with a new Samsung Galaxy S4 if they told comedian Ed Byrne an unfunny joke using the hashtag #nojoke.

However, the campaign really made headlines when one of Tesco Mobile’s responses on Twitter went viral, earning the recipient of the response a new Samsung mobile.

The response, shown below, has been retweeted over 10,000 times already.

2. LifeStyles Condoms  #KnowYourStatus



To raise awareness for National HIV Testing Day last month, LifeStyle Condoms promoted the hashtag #KnowYourStatus on Facebook and Twitter.

The company pledged to donate a condom every time someone tweeted one of the messages above.

3. European Tour – Rory Vs. The Robot 



In this video advertising this year’s European Tour, golf star Rory McIlroy competes with a wisecracking robot to see who can hit the most accurate shot.

The two competitors are aiming for a number of washing machines.

The video has almost two and a half million views on YouTube.

4. O2 – Be More Dog



UK-based telecommunication company O2 are encouraging people to act more like dogs: excited, carefree and life-loving.

O2 has set up the “be more dog” site, where fans can create “Dog Bombs”: messages which encourage the fan’s friends to live a little. The “Dog Bombs” can be shared on Twitter and Facebook.

The campaign is supported by the hashtag #bemoredog on Twitter, Facebook and Google+, and a video on YouTube


5. Jennifer Wen Ma - Nature and Man in Rhapsody of Light at the Water Cube

Nature and Man in Rhapsody of Light

OK, so this isn’t actually a social media promotion, but it is using social media interactions in a new and interesting way.

Nature and Man in Rhapsody of Light at the Water Cube by Artist Jennifer Wen Ma and lighting designer Zheng Jianwei has turned Beijing’s Water Cube into a ever-changing art exhibition.

The light display, which starts at dusk and ends at 10pm daily, visualises the emotions of the millions of Chinese people on social media network Sina Weibo, changing colour accordingly.
