Social Media Promotions Of The Week: 19/07/13
This week’s SMPW is all about the hashtags. There are conversations, competitions and contests, each one using a special hashtag across various hashtag-compatible platforms. Fans and applicants are invited to tweet their tips, to join the conversation on Twitter and to create micro-videos on Instagram and Vine. Here are this week’s SMPWs:
1. Honda – #WantNewCar
On Monday, the United States branch of Japanese car manufacturer Honda ran an innovative social media campaign on Twitter and Vine.
Honda invited people who were unsatisfied with their car to tweet in using the #WantNewCar hashtag. Honda responded in real time to many of the Tweets with creative vine videos.
Social media celebrities Rebecca Black, Tyler Oakley and Buzzfeed’s senior editor Louis Peitzman all got involved, the young songstress vining on behalf of Honda and the two social media experts tweeting about it.
2. Vodafone – #HashtagHolidays
This week, Vodafone Netherlands launched #HashtagHolidays, a Twitter campaign rewarding applicants with a week-long holiday in their chosen destination based on trending hashtags.
To enter, fans have to use the #HashtagHolidays hashtag, as well as a second hashtag denoting the sort of holiday they wanted to go on. There are eight different hashtags: #FoodPorn, #NoFilter, #PartyHard, #YOLO, #Shopaholic, #Glamping, #TouristShit and #LoveBirds.
Vodafone use an algorithm to find cities where the fan’s chosen hashtag is trending, giving applicants the choice. So, for example, #PartyHard might take you to Ibiza.
The campaign is running until August 1.
3. Nissan – #VersaVid
Car manufacturer Nissan is asking Vine and Instagram Video users to create short videos featuring a cut-out model of the new Nissan Versa Note.
A print out of the model can be downloaded from the special "Your Door To More" website, which encourages fans to film the new Nissan surrounded by things they love.
The three winning videos will feature in the upcoming Nissan Versa Note advert, while the six favourites will win their creators $1000 Amazon vouchers.
4. Jobsthefilm – #JobsMovie Trailer
The creators and marketers of upcoming Steve Jobs biopic, “Jobs”, have been quite active on Instagram, promoting their film to the social media savvy.
This week, a trailer for the film was released on Instagram, using the new Instagram Video software.
Earlier this year, “The Wolverine” director James Mangold released a six-second trailer using Vine, but the “Jobs” trailer might be the first to use its rival Instagram’s micro-video creation service.
5. Matalan - #MatalanSummerTips
Yesterday, between 1 and 2 pm, Matalan hosted a Twitter party, inviting parents and grandparents to discuss how they were going to keep their little ones busy during the upcoming Summer holidays.
Five blogger mums were asked to contribute and trade tips and hints on Twitter, Giving advice to the general public about keeping their children occupied: Mammasaurus, Mediocre Mum, Blog by Baby, Oh So Amelia and Claire Justine oxox.
Using the hashtag #MatalanSummerTips, mums and dads were able to join and follow the conversation. Matalan also gave away ten £20 gift vouchers to Matalan fans.
