Social Media Promotions Of The Week: 26/07/2013
Apart from a clever Twitter campaign, it’s all about Facebook and it’s baby brother Instagram this week. As long as you don’t mind having your Facebook interactions scanned through – of course, it is perfectly reasonable if you do – then the top promotion on this week’s list is quite a lot of fun. Whether you try them out for yourself or not, I hope you enjoy this week’s SMPW.
1. Mentos – Fresh News
Do you want to be the subject of your very own news segment? Well, now you can! Breath-freshener Mentos has gathered a team of top reporters/comedians to give your Facebook profile the 9 o’clock news treatment.
To make the headlines, just log into your Facebook profile, go to the special microsite and click “MAKE MY NEWS”. The microsite scans your photos, interactions and friends on Facebook, compiling a short news programme based on your activity.
Comedian Tony Law – who has recently appeared on British panel shows Never Mind The Buzzcocks, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Have I Got News For You – acts as anchor.
2. Chipotle – Twitter Hack
On Sunday, Chipotle’s Twitter account was hacked. Well, it was apparently hacked: in fact, the whole thing was a publicity stunt by the Mexican restaurant company.
The hacker appeared to be a confused Twitter novice, asking for “lime, salt, and onions”, as well as repeating “twitter” over and over again.
Inspired by the hacking of Burger King and Jeep earlier in the year, both of which made the headlines, Chipotle risked ‘hacking’ their own account to get some attention. The stunt worked: Chipotle’s tweets were retweeted over 1,500 times and the company gained hundreds of new followers.
3. Lexus – #LexusInstafilm
Despite the recent release of Instagram Video, Lexus have decided to create a short movie compiled of Instagram photos, each one taken by a Lexus fan and Instagram user.
The film, which features the 2014 Lexus IS, is comprised of 360 photographs taken by 200 different Instagram users at an event in California.
The photos were each hashtagged #LexusInstafilm so that they could be found on Instagram.
4. Zoosk – From The Heart
Dating site Zoosk is answering questions posted on the Zoosk Facebook page with entertaining videos featuring the smooth-talking, radio show-hosting Heart Friend.
In the first video, Heart Friend advises that you wear red on your first date if you want to spark passion. Check out Facebook every Sunday night to see if your questions get answered.
5. Fiat – You Wear
Fiat has created a Facebook app which help fashion aficionados to match their wardrobe with a Fiat 500.
The app looks through a user’s Facebook photos to match them with their dream car.
The app doesn’t work perfectly, as evidenced by the disproportionate number of people (myself included) who were matched with the ‘new age cream’ Fiat. Of course, it might just be because ‘new age cream’ is so in this year.
Fiat fans can then share their car match or invite their friends, upping their chances of winning 1 of 50 £15 retail vouchers or a VIP experience for 2 at the upcoming London Fashion Weekend.
