'Shots of Me': Justin Bieber's new selfie app
Justin Bieber has allegedly invested $1 million into a new app titled 'Shots of Me'. The app is engineered purely for taking and posting selfies. Where it is questionable if this is now a necessity, I think the creators of it will be more than happy to take the capital and even happier with the publicity Bieber is creating for them.
Bieber has risen to enviable fame since he was a young teen star and we have seen him go through the tumultuous life of a child in the limelight. As expected, he has changed his 'butter wouldn't melt' image and gone for a more grown up look now. Sadly, there has yet to be evidence that he has the attitude to match; maybe this investment is a step in that direction.
It is quite common for celebrities to endorse products; but not so common to put their own money into them - when they have possibly no knowledge of the market. But, even if this is just a risky bet and a transparent attempt to become more of a brand himself, Justin Bieber has probably got enough resources to bounce back.
Teenagers live in the world of social media now, they access their Facebooks, Twitter and Instagram 24/7. Generally speaking, teenagers are fans of Justin Bieber, so it all tallies up. The only thing that is a little concerning, is that Biebers fans range to the very young teenagers and pre-teens. This may cause parents a tough time at home when the younger ones are asking to a) have a smart phone and b) put pictures of themselves online.
I am not saying this is a dangerous app but I do think there are serious threats in the online world, for everyone, when it comes to personal information. It also says a lot about society as a whole and the new generation we are raising. Is it really that important to have so many pictures of your own face?
On a more socialistic scale, I find it rather narcissistic and it is all funnelling down to the fact that we are choosing looks over the mind. I know this may sound deep and a little over-thought for an article about a pop-star; but I feel it is a serious issue that we may find ourselves unable to correct in the future.
When it comes to Bieber, he is doing what any celebrity would do - using his fame and money to get more fame... and more money. He has seen a business opportunity and gone for it, I don't feel it will backfire and it may even encourage more celebrities to do the same, time will tell.
For the time being, we will watch Shots of Me and Instagram battle it out for a short period. Frankly, I don't feel there will be any real rivalry here. In short, Instagram is for adults and Shots of Me is just giving teenagers a space for themselves. I could compare it to what Bebo was to Facebook a few years ago.
However you feel about Justin Bieber, or selfies, this app is now available for you to try.
How do you feel about Shots of Me? Will you be using it?
