Social Media Report - Is Facebook Really Dying?

Facebook fights back

Is Facebook heading for extinction any time soon? I doubt it. To start with, Facebook can boast having over a billion users to the site in some occasions. If it is going to die, it’s likely to be a slow and painful death.

It’s true that the site may not be as ‘cool’ as it used to be. More and more users now have to face one of life’s biggest decisions: “do I accept my mum’s friend request?” But although a wider age range is using the site due to its accessibility and ‘in-your-face-ness’, it’s still a major life activity for most people, regardless of age.

You’ve got to admit, when you open an internet browser, one of the first places you go to is a social media platform. It may not be Facebook, but that’s probably where most of your friends are, and that’s the one place you can properly connect with them.

Many argue that other social platforms are overtaking Facebook as the number one choice for users in the online world. But even if that does eventually become the case, does that mean that Facebook will have no place?

Twitter offers things that Facebook can’t. The novelty of only have 140 characters to express yourself means that people are more likely to notice what you’re saying, but then again, the lifespan of a tweet is a lot shorter than that of a Facebook status.

Instagram specialises in sharing photos and adding nifty effects to them in a way to either improve them or to impress their followers with their totally unique skills. Facebook photos now have a similar mechanism, and are likely to be more personable since your friends, not necessarily your ‘followers’, can see them.

It’s true that Facebook has taken features from these sites to maintain their status as the most sociable of social sites, but others have merely taken features from Facebook, and expanded them to become a phenomenon of their own.

Communication is naturally a big part of any social platform. Facebook messenger has had its attempts of cracking the medium without fully cracking it. That is, until Facebook took the decision to buy the incredibly popular app, WhatsApp.

Spending a lot of money (A LOT of money) on the acquisition, Zuckerberg and his team realised that they may have needed to step in before other formats escape their boundaries.

Facebook has become a way of life to people all around the world. I’m not saying that it will last forever, but it certainly won’t follow the same path as Myspace or Bebo in the fact that they couldn’t keep up with the times.

Although some are reporting a slight dip in the amount of teenage users of Facebook, the site is developing and evolving to keep up with changing demographics and please more and more people. Don’t expect to be writing 'RIP FB' anytime soon.
