Social Media Drinking Game Gets Benevolent Makeover
How dangerous NekNomination actually is?
The viral craze usually demonstrates someone downing huge amounts of alcohol, cooking ingredients, and even in some cases animal remains. All this pointless binging and cruelty required somebody to intervene and show that the human race is capable of more than just guzzling alcohol, and luckily two examples of benevolence appeared.
Using YouTube as a platform, Brent Lindeque of Johannesburg, and Julien Voinson of Bordeaux are using the game to swap alcohol for food and then generously giving it to homeless people. It has resulted in a wave of people now creating new games such as “Smart Nomination” and “RAKNomination” (Random Acts of Kindness). The point is to deter others from taking part in the hazardous NekNomination game, whilst spreading awareness about other important issues in the world. During Lindeque’s video, he presents facts about poverty in South Africa. It is a certainly a very clever way to promote awareness due to the already heavy audience for the original game.

Currently his video has over 730,000 views and it was posted 3 weeks ago, so the experiment has no doubt been a successful one thus far. To back this up Voinson’s video has more than 845,000 views and was posted on the 12th of February. Hopefully this will inspire many more to ditch the mindless original version of the game and spread acts of kindness, no matter how small.
It is unfortunate, however, to see that it requires videos such as these to highlight key issues globally. It showcases how governments need to do more from an educational point of view at both ends of the spectrum. Some people cannot afford to be educated to a certain level therefore leading to unfortunate circumstances such as living a homeless life. Now that the problem is here, education should be provided to the masses telling of how these people suffer, and how we as society can prevent it further. For now though it is refreshing to see unity amongst people from different classes of society, and hopefully more people use this as motivation to help people who are less fortunate.
These videos are a great advert for how social media can be put to good use, and how it can inspire thousands to take up a trend to help others. Over the past two weeks the Internet has been flooded with acts of kindness whilst drowning the drinking game, which is now a thing of the past.
Feel free to view Lindeque's video below, and get out there and be generous!
