The results not only say that women are more active on social media, but they also use it in more ways than men do. Surprisingly all the main platforms boast more users of the female variety, including Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter. The big draw for the female audience online seems to be Pinterest, with a user base of 33 per cent of females online. This is in comparison of 8 per cent of men online using the site.
Despite female dominance in most of the categories, the fortune is flipped when taking LinkedIn into consideration. 24 per cent of all adult men use the site in comparison to 19 per cent of women. Women do continue their dominance though, and interestingly they lead the way in the use of mobile social media. 46 per cent of women use their smartphone to check on social media goings on, whilst 43 per cent of men use their phones to perform the same tasks.
This is true for tablets also, with 32 per cent of women checking social media activities on their devices, and 20 per cent of men doing the same. From a marketing point of view, it is useful to know that women are more likely to interact with brands via social media, with more than half of women using social networking to support certain brands, and taking advantage of offers online. This is in comparison to less 50 per cent of men doing the same.
Women continue their subjugation in the news department, with 58 per cent of females online getting their information on Facebook, whilst only 43 per cent of men use the social networking giant to gain their news fix.
These results are not too surprising to see considering that similar figures were produced around five years ago now, but it is interesting to see that women are leading the switch from desktop to mobile networking. This sort of information may lead social media marketers to change strategy, as they already have a large population of females using facilities online, they could change their tone of advertising to appeal to a male audience.
