Even Older Companies Are Thriving On Social Media
How companies are keeping up with the digital age?
General Electric is not an attractive company at first glance or search, but they are one of the many who are using social media to boost their online presence. They may be 122 years of age, but in the modern world it is all about adapting to your surroundings, and that is something that General Electric have done to maximum effect.
The company was heavily represented at the recent Shorty Awards, which honour the best brands, agencies, and professionals on social media. GE took home Best Brand on Vine, and were also nominated in the Best Fortune 500 Brand on Social Media, Twitter, and Instagram categories.
This is an incredible achievement when you consider the age of the company being 122, but it poses the question how a company with this much old-school tradition keep up with the young blood in today’s digital age? Well, it keeps information fun and engaging for a start. GE humanise their brand by educating its followers and taking photos of jet engines and other visually attractive technology.
GE cleverly position themselves as more than a maker of refrigerators and light bulbs, and by doing this they lead the pack in terms of social media innovation. Below will demonstrate how on three forms of social media, General Electric have become the frontrunners.

Vine
They were very quick off the mark on Vine, and registered one day after the video-sharing app launched, and this proved to be crucial. They became an established force by sharing do-it-yourself videos, and also launched the #6SecondScience Fair campaign. This encouraged fans to create their own scientific experiments, and the best ones would get ‘re-vined.’ Vine has been an important part of GE’s success and picking up the award for this topped off a great period of video sharing for the company.

Go onto General Electric’s official Instagram page and you will be in awe of what you see. Stunning images of jet engines own the page, and also photos of turbines, factories and locomotives. This gives the company a massive image, and works more as a mind-set both ways. They are encouraging users to break out of the view that they are an old withered company, and get with the times.

The firm are extremely active on Twitter, and use it to share infographics, reports, and photos as a means to educate its users in 140 characters or less. They have a massive following of well over 200,000 followers, but they still take the time to respond and thank those who answered questions.
General Electric is a fantastic success story, and this is down to their presence on social media. Of course before the digital age we find ourselves in now they were a success, and their legacy stretches back 122 years. This proves the company is chameleon like in its ability to withstand pressure through the ages, and not only are they succeeding in keeping up to date with technological advances, they are becoming main players in it.
