Revenge porn increasing on Social Media

Explicit Content

Online support groups around the UK are reporting that they are having to deal with a growing number of victims of “revenge porn” that is being posted on social media.

It involves people uploading sexual content of ex-partners in an attempt to expose them (literally) to the internet. It is an action that can be easily avoided with the aid of common sense, but in a world where #AfterSexSelfie is a craze on Twitter, I’m afraid that common sense is a thing prominent in another age. Some of the victims are reporting that their personal details have also been leaked online.

The National Stalking Helpline, Women’s Aid and the UK Safer Internet Centre have all said that the issue has become a regular occurrence. This comes to no surprise as connectivity has been made easier around the world, and uploading videos is not a complex task these days.

Campaigners now want the UK to follow in the footsteps of some American States, where they have introduced specific laws in order to tackle the growing issue of revenge porn. This is probably the most sensible thing to do as the embarrassment caused by people posting this kind of content is unbearable for some.

An example of this is Anisha Vora, whose ex-partner was jailed for six months in New Jersey after he posted sexually explicit photos of her of a series of websites. She explained “I went from three sites to over 200. My ex was putting my address out, my phone number.”

“I stopped going to school for a year and a half. I was afraid to leave my house,” said the 24 year old. “I had known him for more than 10 years, it wasn’t a nasty break-up we just went our separate ways. I never thought he would post the photos.”

In Anisha’s case should acknowledges her mistake, and instead of introducing more laws into society, maybe people should just take note of the mistakes of others and learn. It’s a ridiculous idea sending this sort of content in the first place, as you never know who could get hold of the media, whether the device is stolen or lost, there is always the risk.

Revenge porn laws are in place in California, Texas and just recently they were implemented in Utah, showing just how big of an issue it has become. With politicians campaigning in New York for the same measures, one sense that before long, these laws will be inserted into western law.

Lessons are to be learnt from these revelations, and the general wish is that as a society, we shouldn’t need laws to prevent this kind of behaviour. There needs to be a simple concoction of respect and common sense when looking at issues like this, and even if a couple goes through a nasty break-up, revenge porn is never the answer.
