Glastonbury Headliners On Social Media: Kasabian
Leicester based band ready to take on Glastonbury
Sunday night sees the closing of Glastonbury music festival, and the social media community were at odds when trying to figure out who would be receiving the honour of playing in front of nearly 200,000 people. The rumour mill was spinning at some pace, and many predicted correctly that it would be Kasabian.Souce: itb.co.uk |
It has been a landmark week for the band from Leicester, and a week on from their homecoming gig, the British favourites are now gearing up for the second biggest gig of their career - headlining Glastonbury. Usually the Glastonbury set would be the highlight of any band’s career, but Kasabian played in front of 50,000 people in the city they grew up in on Saturday night.
Speaking ahead of the mega-festival, which commences today with acts including Elbow, Arcade Fire, Lily Allen, De La Soul and Blondie, Kasabian guitarist and songwriter Serge Pizzorno reflected on the homecoming gig, and also the recent album release, which saw their fifth studio album 48:13 go straight in the charts at number one. He admitted that so much had been going on lately that Glastonbury was in the back of the mind.
“I think that’s a good thing, to be honest, as we've just been taken up with the Leicester gig and everything,” he stated. “Glastonbury is such a different thing.”
“It’s the greatest festival in the world and the honour of closing it is massive. It’s the festival the world watches, isn't it?”
Despite the excitement of closing Glastonbury, Serge declared that it would be very tough to top the Leicester gig, and he said that particular concert is something “that has never been done” in the city before. “It’ll be the band’s legacy,” he said. “Total respect to the powers that be for letting it happen.”
Before the huge gig in Leicester, the social media community were speculating online as to who the supporting acts would be. There were rumours that either Noel or Liam Gallagher were to make an appearance, due to their affiliation with the band, but there were also grumblings of Arctic Monkeys and Jake Bugg.

Others were betting that it would be an all-Leicester line-up with Showaddwaddy, Engelbert Humperdinck, Sam Bailey and Mark Morrison, but in the end all the social media speculation was found to be pure fabrication. Support was provided by Rudimental, Zane Lowe, Jagwar Ma and Beardyman, but Serge did reveal that there was one surprise visitor they were hoping to secure.
“Someone asked me if we were going to get a special guest on stage. We tried to get Richard lll’s bones to come on stage but they wouldn't have it.”
As the festival nears its opening, the social media hype has reached fever-pitch, and despite not having a strong presence of sites such as Twitter and Facebook, that has not stopped others speculating on what the band could do on Sunday evening.
It will be a fitting evening for the band from Leicester, as their rise to this point has been has been one that has required hard work and determination. Before their latest release, Kasabian were a forgotten force in the music world, but they are back with a big bang, and are ready to wow the world on sunday evening.
