Iraqis Turn To Whisper App As An Outlet During Conflict
Anonymous app becomes an outlet during conflicts
Whisper is the latest app to be used by Iraqis in order to dodge the country's tough crackdown on the use of social media across the country during the conflicts.Whisper is known as being a 'secret sharing' app that allows the user to post their message anonymously.
According to editor in chief, Neetzan Zimmerman, Whisper's usage in Iraq more than doubled in the days between the 12th June and 15th June.
The anonymous messaging app is just about the only social media outlet left after a the country's social media crackdown. One Whisper user posted "All social media were stopped in Iraq, my only escape is Whisper."
The messaging app operates on a predominantly anonymous basis and doesn't track user information, but it can use geolocation to ascertain a user's location within a mile radius.
Zimmerman says Iraqis are posting everything from frustration with the government to everyday issues about relationships and life in Iraq.
