Prince Harry Is Not A Fan Of Social Media
Spike Wells does not approve
In an extraordinary contradiction Prince Harry has confessed that he can’t abide using social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, whilst attending a school program where he was encouraging children to do just that. During the program he also revealed that he used to dabble in Facebook, and that his secret pseudonym used to be “Spike Wells.”Source: express.co.uk |
He was speaking in East London, as he visited the Bethnal Green Academy where he met with students from the local vicinity. They were all taking part in a program where they were learning to Tweet and post on Facebook in order to promote the Invictus Games. The games are a global event that involve wounded military veterans who compete in Paralympic-style events. The games are scheduled to take place in London, and will kick off in September.
The 29-year-old Prince spoke about the Games passionately, and spoke highly of the volunteer students who had been selected to work as “digital champions” for the event. Despite his praise for the Games and his gratitude towards those who will volunteer during them, he of course had time to criticise the social media sphere. Twitter especially suffered the Royal wrath due to the element of free speech on the site, which makes figures of hereditary rule clear targets.
“I’m not on social media but I used to be,” he said. He also stated that he would like to be more involved in social media when it comes to promoting causes that were sentimental to him, such as the Invictus Games.
“The issue for myself and my family, put quite simply, is that it’s very hard for me to tweet about the Invictus Games and tweet about something that means a lot to me, whereas I at the same time really quite hate Twitter by the invasion of privacy. I think you'll understand what I’m talking about.”

Despite his “hate” for social media, the British Monarchy has tried to keep up-to-date with modern technological advances, with both Buckingham Palace and Clarence House possessing Twitter and Facebook accounts. Prince Harry has often expressed his anger though when leaks about the Royal family are surfaced online via social networks.
He has been a user in the past though, with the Prince setting up a Facebook account, using the pseudonym Spike Wells. It is obvious why he doesn't like social media, as it gives people the platform to speak freely; something you cannot do outside of those walls. In the sphere of social media, the Royal family become abstract again, so of course it is not going to be endorsed fully.
