World Cup Lights Up Social Media
Germany under Rihanna’s umbrella
The ruthlessly efficient World Cup winners seem to have gained an unlikely fan in the form of Bajan diva Rihanna, who has taken to Twitter to show her support for her adopted nation (Barbados were pretty unlikely to win, seeing as they didn’t even qualify to compete).
The pop star turned football pundit has tweeted surprisingly insightful commentary for countless matches since the start of the tournament in June, posing last night with the winning team and their trophy. Following a string of managerial suggestions, she posted a set of selfies with winning goal scorer Mario Götze and his team mates, having wriggled her way into the dressing room.
Rihanna’s 36.3 million Twitter followers have not only been treated to her new found football insight, but also a quick flash from the extrovert singer. She helped contribute to the 32 million tweets that were sent during the match, which at one point broke the all-time record for the most tweets per minute with over half a million at full time.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel got in on the celebrations too. Never to be accused of being old-fashioned, she joined the footballers and rock stars in posing for a selfie with her German players and the trophy.
