The Social Media Heavy-Weights Of 2014
We Are The Champions
So a new year is upon us at long last.
Which means that I Sadly can’t write about Christmas
anymore. I’m sure some of you are rejoicing. To the rest of you, just another
year to go, it’ll come in no time.
While we drearily pull
ourselves back to work or finally get around to cleaning up all that vomit
someone left behind your couch after the New Years Eve party (You know who you
are) let’s have a quick recap of who
dominated social media last year shall we?

Taking the top spot of 2014 was the ever smiley Katy Perry. She topped just about all fronts of social media;
she also clocked up the most viewed video on YouTube which was her Dark Horse
music video. She’s already been offered to perform at the Superbowl next year.
(You know, Rugby for pansies) To add to the list of digital accomplishments she
was also the most streamed performer on Spotify. I’m sure we’ll see how Spotify
does this year with all the drama it faced towards the end of the year.
This information was gathered by a survey by Starcount which took into account celebrities’
social media presence across 12 social networks, including Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram. Perry came out on top, having earned 24.7 million Facebook likes, 27
million Twitter followers, 9.5
million Instagram followers and 3
billion YouTube views.
In second place, is PewDiePie.
Who, irritating or not is an incredible presence for gaming and the streaming
community. He managed to rack up 5.7
billion YouTube views last year. That’s more views than anyone else in the top 10.

PewDiePie is a YouTube personality who spends his time
playing games. Ah, the childhood dream of getting paid to play. Not sure I
could stomach that nowadays.
In third place is Taylor Swift. She earned 31.5 million likes and was mentioned in
comments over 1.6 million times. I’m fairly sure my friend Will was
responsible for at least half of them.
Honourable mentions have to go to Shakira who exploded in
social media presence after releasing the song ‘La La La (Brazil 2014), which
as a World Cup song, was bound to do quite well.
Here’s the full top 10 celebrities of the year according to
the survey:
1. Katy Perry
2. PewDiePie
3. Taylor Swift
4. Shakira
5. Justin Bieber
6. Cristiano Ronaldo
7. One Direction
8. Pitbull
9. Eminem
10. Miley Cyrus
So there are the social media champions of 2014.
I can’t help but wonder who’ll take the charge for 2015.
Maybe I’ll be on there. But I wouldn't bet on that.
