New App Limits Your Social Media and Smartphone Usage
Switch Off, Tune In
There’s a new app called ‘QualityTime’ which can show you
how long you spend logged into your social media accounts and plugged into your smartphone. It can also limit your
social addictions by stopping you from using your accounts once you reach your
chosen limits for the day, week or month.

We’re a world
addicted to social media and our smartphones. A study
last year by the Bank of America revealed that nearly half of the adults in
America wouldn't even be able to go a single day without their smartphones. I
know I wouldn't. What I am supposed to look at when I get into bed? I can’t
exactly carry my desktop in there, it’d be way too overheated.
If you fit into this group of folks like me who just have to
know how your latest tweet or blog post has done then this new app
QualityTime has been made tailored for you.
One of the main features of the QualityTime app is how it
will work out how much time you spend logged into your social media accounts and on your phone.
So if you’re just curious and not just after some rehabilitation you’ll be able
to see how your online time works out.
QualityTime will give you a nicely laid out visual breakdown
which clearly shows you where you most spend your time when you’re glued to
your smartphone. It will also create charts and graphs outlining your hourly,
daily, weekly and monthly usage.

Furthermore, if you’re being told off by your friends and
family for always being more interested in your phone then having an actual
conversation with them, QualityTime will offer you the chance to ‘Take A Break’.
By activating the Take A Break function, the app will stop you from opening
your apps and for the real addictions, it will lock your screen as well. Ouch.
Once you create your profile, QualityTime will reveal how
your last six months of usage has played out. I was very nervous to check, but
I set out to download the app anyway. Unfortunately, (or fortunately for my
sanity) the app is only available on Android at the moment, so I was spared the
shock of my social addictions.
ZeroDesktop, the developers behind QualityTime also created DinnerTime,
an app which allows parents to limit and control how much their children spend
plugged into their smartphones. Hopefully for more meaningful discussion over
mashed potatoes and green beans.
ZeroDesktop president and co-founder Richard Sah commented
on our smartphone obsession.
‘Smartphone use has become so widely integrated into our everyday lives, it’s difficult for people to realize just how frequently and compulsively they use their phones. If you asked me whether I’m addicted to my smartphone, I would say absolutely not. Then I discovered that I spend 3 hours a day on my phone simply out of habit.’
If all of this sounds like something that you need to get a
hold of, check out QualityTime’s tutorial video here:
I've only checked my phone twice
today. Once was to use the calculator. Go me.
