Government Requests For Twitter Data Skyrockets
They Came For Your Tweets
Ah, digital privacy. You elude us at every turn.
I think it’s more than safe to assume in this age that utterly
everything that consists of your digital footprint is not private. Every search
you make, every letter you post is going to get recorded down in one way or
another. There is no privacy anymore, I promise you. Anything that’s out there
is accessible if someone wanted access to it.

If you thought your private data on Twitter was safe, I’d
think again as well. Twitter have recently published their latest transparency report outlining the amount
of requests they receive for user data. This report showed that the number of
requests has greatly spiked since last year. Should you be shocked or
surprised? Nope, really not.
The number of requests for user information in the second
half of 2014 jumped 40% over the previous six months.
Based on the report, (which you can check yourself just by
following the link above) we can see that:
‘Twitter received 2,871 requests for
7,144 user accounts and cooperated with 52% of them.
More than half of government requests came from the United
States — up 29% from the first half of last year — but the company noted that
it saw the biggest increases from Russia and Turkey.
Russia, in fact, had never requested data about Twitter
users but made 108 requests this time. The company did not cooperate with
Russia and Turkey on any of their requests.’ –Mashable
This report is released twice yearly and lets us all see
which countries are trying to do the most snooping on your Twitter profiles.
Perhaps this huge increase in requests stems from terror
groups now operating on social media in order to recruit. You also have
pro-terror accounts sharing videos from the extremists groups. So maybe these
requests just mean that they’re buckling down in terms of shutting these groups
down.

Though with Russia and Turkey’s extremely flawed privacy and
freedom laws, I do question their motives behind all their requests.
