Snapchat Selfie Identified Killer
Teen Charged With Murder Following On From Snapchat
mirror.co.uk |
A US student has been charged with murder after he sent a selfie of himself and his victim’s body to friends via Snapchat.
Maxwell Marion Morton, 16, was arrested for killing Ryan
Mangan in his home near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Not the cheeriest story. Sorry if I’m dragging your day down. I’ll write something a bit more chipper after this.
Apparently, Maxwell wasn't exactly aware that Snapchat isn't
as encrypted as you would have expected. Even though the pictures you send do self-destruct,
as everyone knows you can just screen shot the picture. Which is exactly what
happened in this case. A friend who received the image from Maxwell
screenshotted the picture, showed it to his mother and then the police were
contacted. The Snapchat in question has proven to be key evidence for
prosecutors.
'[Police] received a copy of the photo which depicted
the victim sitting in the chair with a gunshot wound to the face. It also
depicts a black male taking the 'selfie,' with his face facing the camera and
the victim behind the actor. The photo had the name 'Maxwell' across the top.’ A
police affidavit states, according to The
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
The boy who received the Snapchat from Maxwell also received
texts saying: ‘Told you I cleaned up the shells’ and ‘Ryan was not the last one.’
I think I’d much rather be receiving a bit of spam texts
than horrible things like this. I’ll even take a few creepy stalker messages
than things like this. It’s been a few years since I received stuff like that.
Am I losing my charm in my old age?
Nonetheless, this story feels so tragic and so unnecessary. Our
thoughts go out to Ryan, his family and all those affected by this cowardly
murder.
Maxwell Marion Morton confessed to killing Mr Mangan after
police found a 9mm handgun hidden in his home, according to The Tribune-Review.
Police have said that he will be charged and face trial as an adult.
