Top Five Famous Pets on Social Media
After the finale of Crufts 2015 on Sunday I have been left to start the week searching for something cute and cuddly.In order to fight the urge to adopt a dog I have decided to scope out the doggy divas and feline Facebookers of the world and discover the most famous pets on the net.
Taking #1 with nearly 20M followers:
Boo
@Buddyboowaggytails
Owner: Facebook employee Irene Ahn
Breed: Pomeranian
Age: 8
Home Town: San Francisco
Insta-Followers: 550k
Facebook Likes: 17M
Boo, the public figure, was added onto Facebook by his owner in 2009 and became popular in 2010 when both Ke$ha and Khloe Kardashian sent tweets, linking to the page. Khloe K gave him the title of ‘cutest dog on the planet.’
Since then he has released two books, a calendar, a stuffed dog toy, been the subject of a death hoax and even become the Official Pet Liaison of Virgin America.
His website states that Boo is a Pisces and he enjoys sleeping, eating and just looking absolutely adorable.
What Do We Think Made Boo So Famous?
His short haircut that makes him look less like a Pomeranian and more like a bear.
#2 with nearly 10M followers:
Tardar Sauce (AKA Grumpy Cat)
@realgrumpycat
Owner: Tabatha Bundesen
Breed: Mixed
Age: 2
Home Town: Morristown, Arizona
Insta-Followers: 577k
Grumpy Cat’s owner posted a picture to Reddit in September 2012. Not long after the picture was uploaded it became a meme/image macro and spread around the internet overnight.
Grumpy Cat now shares a manager with Keyboard Cat and Nyan Cat, so she’s flying with the best of them. Grumpy Cat also published a best-selling book and featured in her own calendar. She has been in films and even been a special guest on Today and Good Morning America.
Grumpy Cat has been so successful that her owner had to take time out of work in order to manage the busy schedule. She was also the first animal to have made a grand total of £64 million for her owner.
What Do We Think Made Grumpy Cat So Famous?
We have a feeling that it could be something to do with that grumpy face, which is apparently because of an under bite and a feline dwarfism.

@sockington
Owner: Jason Scott
Breed: Domestic Shorthair
Age: 8
Home Town: Waltham, Massachusetts
Twitter Followers: 1.34M
Facebook Likes: 375k
One of our most experienced social media users, Sockington, has been an active tweeter since 2007. He was rescued in 2004 from outside a subway station. Now his owner writes interesting and humorous posts from the cat’s perspective which goes something like this:
'I KNEW THIS NAP I TOOK TO RECOVER FROM MY SLEEPING WOULD TIRE ME OUT great work socks good sleep hustle now get back in there HUT HUT zzzzzz'
In May 2009 The Independent called Socks “Twitter’s latest megastar” and Sockington was named Parade Magazine’s #1 Pet Power Player of 2014. Socks and his owner have decided not to sell out to endorse other businesses, despite the offers. But there is a book and possibly some Sockington t-shirts in the pipe line for 2015.
What Do We Think Made Sockington So Famous?
Marnie, formally known as Stinky, is another heartwarming story of animal rescue. Her owner adopted her, despite her age and health (stink) problems. The pair now work together to encourage others to give homes to older dogs.
Marnie became popular in 2014 via Instagram after some photos were uploaded. Marnie is a hit with celebrities and made an appearance at the Grammy awards where she made friends with the likes of Taylor Swift, Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran.
Our in-office Marnie fanatic, Jack Tottie says, ‘Marnie videos are possibly the greatest thing to ever happen on the internet.'
What Do We Think Made Marnie So Famous?
It definitely has something to do with her lop-sided look and lolling tongue. And despite concerns, Marnie isn't suffering for her fame. Her Tumblr says she is a survivor of Vestibular Syndrome which often gives dogs a head tilt. As for her tongue, it’s just big and she was born that way.

@manny_the_frenchie
Owner: Amber Chavez & Jon Huang
Breed: French Bulldog
Age: 4
Home Town: Chicago, Illinois
Insta-Followers: 656k
Manny is the most popular French Bulldog on the internet and it was his photos that led him to success. Normally seen sleeping in the sink or dressed in old man accessories he has worked his way up to the top of the doggy modeling career. He has worked for Audi, Martha Stewart’s PetSmart Line, the White Sox and has even been on the Steve Harvey show.
What Do We Think Made Manny So Famous?
He’s cute in a pugly way, right? Sometimes we want a bit of ugly. Plus that dog can flash one hell of a smile.
Spot of Honour:
Biddy The Travelling Hedgehog
One of the smallest and cutest animals on social media passed away on March the 1st. He was four years old, but that’s pretty good for a hedgehog. Biddy will be missed, but we know he will rest happy having seen more of the world in one short lifetime than many of us ever will!

Maybe it’s the innovative updates from his owner or maybe it is his rags to riches story that inspires other online pets?
