Facebook Introduces New Video Chat
Facebook’s motto at the moment seems to be “Get in on
everybody else’s action and take what you can.” As if being the top dog of
social networks wasn't enough, they seem to be out to destroy all their
competitors.
Can’t blame them I suppose – it’s just good business, right?
So let’s have a look at what Facebook’s done: They tried
taking hashtags and trending from Twitter, Facebook Video attempted to steal
YouTube’s thunder and there have been plenty more examples. And now they’re picking a fight with
Skype..
The new Facebook Video Chat will allow users to talk
face-to-face with their contacts through the Messenger app. It works like and
looks like FaceTime. It comes up like a phone call and then voila, your
mug is plastered across somebody else’s screen, that’s if they don’t hit that “reject
call” button of course.
The new service will work across Apple and Android software.
The whole thing is a bit twee and very, very Facebook: “Oh let’s bring everyone
together, no matter what phone they use.”
It’s actually a really good idea though, because FaceTime will be left far, far behind with it's limited user-base.
According to Facebook they think their edge over Skype and
FaceTime actually comes from the ability to switch between text and video. I guess that’s something too...
Another handy element of the video chat is that you can turn off one video
feed in order to help give the bandwidth to the person who needs it most.
Say there’s
Caroline in Australia who is trying to show Jimmy the view of a beach,
whilst Jimmy is sitting in his bedroom back in North London. If Jimmy
turns his video chat off, Caroline doesn't have to stare at his man cave
anymore and Jimmy will be able to see a better quality video of Caroline’s view.
Clever, eh?
