The Results Are In: The Winners of the 2015 Webby Awards
tubefilter.com |
It’s kind of difficult to believe that the Webby Awards have
been running for 20 years now. The first year, then called the ‘Webbie Awards’, were hosted at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. An episodic online serial
called The Spot won site of the year. Since then the show has gained more and
more momentum, first moving to San Francisco and then New York. The
International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences was also founded off the
back of the awards in 1998.
This year the awards pulled in over 500,000 votes across
more than 200 different countries and while that pales in comparison to the
whopping 1.5 million votes registered in 2012, it’s still pretty impressive.
The IADAS panel, which has included people like David Bowie, Matt Groening,
Harvey Weinstein and Arianna Huffington as the years have gone by, were the
ones who ultimately picked the winners. Since there’s such a broad spread of categories, there were no less than 344 winners this year. I could run through
that full list but we’d be here for weeks, if you want to see it, head on over
to the official website. For our purposes, here are some of the highlights:
Webby Special Achievement: Social Media Artist Jerome Jarre
Webby Breakout of the Year: Tinder
Webby Lifetime Achievement: Louis Rossetto and Jane Metcalfe
(Founders of Wired)
Webby Special Achievement: ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
Outstanding Comedic Performance: Chelsea Peretti (One of the Greats)
Best Actress: Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)
Best Actor: Titus Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)
Best Use of Photography: Mashable
Fashion and Beauty: Vice
Best Entertainment App: The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy
Fallon
Best Humor Website: Funny or Die
Best Animals Social: Grumpy Cat
Best Music App: SoundCloud
The New York Times, NASA, BuzzFeed, College Humour,
Illusion, Ted, ESPN and countless others pulled in awards in numerous different
categories including news, art, science and general web presentation.
The
actual award ceremony will be hosted in New York by Hannibal Buress on May 18th,
before being broadcast online the next day. The ceremonies are perhaps best
known for their ‘5 word acceptance speech’ policy. Past highlights have
included “Me. Me. Me. Me. Me.” (Stephen Colbert) and “Can anyone fix my
computer?” (The Beastie Boys). I’ve no idea what Chelsea Peretti will come up
with, but I look forward to finding out.
