Apple 3D Displays. No Glasses Required!
Yesterday the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office published a
patent application from Apple. They have been busy researching spatially interactive
displays for televisual, computing and mobile devices.
The point of these new displays is to present a viewer with
the option for both two dimensional and three dimensional images. It will also allow multiple users to see
different images from different angles.

This could be fantastic for Apple. If they can pull it off
and are able to develop a screen where there is no need for those goofy goggle
glasses, where you can view multiple images and switch between 2D and 3D images
all in one go... That’s like... rocket science or something!
The display would use gaze-tracking which means that the
tech would be able to track eye positions from a built in camera/sensor. That data
is sent to a processing unit which combines the information with the data from
the on board motion sensors. This then relays a highly specific output to be presented
to the user’s eyes.
The displays will also be compiled of three individual
layers, two outer displays and another between them. They will be separated by
varying thicknesses in order to create that perception of depth.
These layers can be activated at separate times by the device, which limits what the left and right eyes see. This is how you get the varying of 2D/3D images.
What is even more interesting
about these layers is that it also enables different images to be sent to
different viewers, even when they're both looking at the screen at the same time. This could open up the world of dual-screen gaming once and
for all!
Apple has apparently been thinking of using a transparent OLED display. These types of display panels do not require a backlight function, this will make
the entire piece of tech light weight and thin.
I am so excited, this is beginning to sound SO
futuristic, I love it.
