Facebook Plan WhatsApp B2C Chat
WhatsApp has seen huge growth as a voice calling/messaging service with 800 million
users but it’s still struggling to turn revenue. Facebook, who purchased WhatsApp last year for $22 billion, might allow businesses to
contact WhatsApp users to help the app reach new customers.
Business-to-Consumer (B2C) interactions would allow marketers to contact consumers using WhatsApp and these
functions are undergoing testing with Facebook Messenger. WhatsApp has click-through-rates (CTR) of 114 percent
for their content whereas Facebook’s CTR are 63 percent. The messaging service
suddenly looks like an untapped resource by marketers.

Facebook’s chief financial offier, David
Wehner said “We think that enabling that B2C messaging has good business
potential for us,” at a JPMorgan technology conference Monday in Boston, reports
Bloomberg. “As we learn those things, I think
there’s going to be opportunities to bring some of those things to WhatsApp,
but that’s more longer-term than the near-term.”
By delivering core Internet services,
the acquisition’s aim is to bring more connectivity and utility to users
worldwide, as well as accelerate growth.
The company will remain to operate independently and retain its brand.
WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum will be joining the Facebook Board of
Directors.
With WhatApp approaching the 1 billion users
mark, Mark Zuckerberg has said that WhatsApp could start becoming meaningful
for business. WhatsApp made $16 million in revenue in the first half of last
year but ultimately lost $232 million. To regain revenue, WhatsApp will charge
marketers to contact WhatsApp users.
Currently, WhatsApp is free to download
and use for the first year and then charges a $0.99 subscription fee. It’s
especially popular with people making international video calls and messaging
instead of traditional texting and incurring international cellular data
charges.
