From The Sims to Social Media – There’s a New App on the Block
Sims creator, Will Wright, is saying goodbye to the world of video game simulation and starting to focus on social networks instead.
The app goes by the name of Thred and is currently only available on
iOS. The gist of the app is to build a slideshow (or Thred) of your images to which
you can add stickers, filters, text and links.

You can select the base images from your own photo reel or
from the selection within the app. To make it easy to build up your thred you
can also use the calendar mode to view the photos you took on particular dates.
After you’ve decided on a photo, it's only a matter of
adding all the tacky stickers you want until you’re happy. Then you build up a
thred, a bit like you do a Snapchat story.
However, the app hasn’t done hugely well so far. In a bid to
be different from Instagram, the filters can get a bit cringe worthy. Apparently,
it isn’t too easy to find your friends either. They could probably do something
similar to Snapchat by automatically connecting to other mobile users, or connect
via Facebook – or something? After all, it is a social app and if there’s no
way of finding your pals, then users will soon lose interest.
But overall, the idea of adding stickers onto a photo is something that will certainly stick out. Keen social networkers tried to do this on Snapchat using emojis, but it didn't really work.
Also, giving users the ability
to add links to images also makes these pictures more than just that. It’s a
way to make them interactive, a way to advertise something, a way to promote an
event. Thred have found themselves a clever niche but whether it takes off or not is
something that still hangs in the balance.
This app will give users the power to make the most of their creative side. You could literally make stories out of your pictures, rather than
have them as short-lived snapshots. I like the sound of this and if this guy
still has what he had when he made Sims, then I can see no reason why this app
can’t soar up in the charts!
