Google Bomb Devastates White House
It looks like Google-bombing is back with a bang. The king of search engines has profusely apologised for a racial slur, that
when searched on Google maps, directs users straight to The White House. A
spokesperson from Google issued the following statement:
Some inappropriate results are surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologise for any offence this may have caused. Our teams are working to fix this issue quickly,
Although Google bombing seems the most likely cause, the
reason behind this mishap is yet to be officially clarified.
Just in case you, like me (before a quick tutorial from our
in-house Web Developer), hadn’t heard of Google bombing, here’s what I learned;
put simply, Google bombing is the act of manipulating Google’s search results
by reinforcing a link between a word and a search result; the more people
search for Tony Blair using the words “war criminal”, the more likely an
innocent search of the word “war criminal” will bring up TB in the results.
If this is the case with the “N***** King” situation it
means a lot of collective time and effort has been put behind it; something
very sad to believe. But on a brighter note, it could also just be an
individual whose misbehaviour has slipped through a gap in Google’s grip on
political correctness.
Google has a huge workload in keeping everything under its
wide wings perfectly P.C. This isn’t helped by the fact that their systems are
automated, meaning their results are often totally influenced by the billions
of searches we users make every day. In short, this means that Google almost
mirrors the thoughts of society, moulded by leading questions and prominent stereotypes.
They then have the job of the calm daughter reining back Granddad’s immigration
rant, quietly apologising and editing as his mouth marches on.
So I think it’s only fair to say that; Google, we accept
your apology. The phrase “finding a needle in a haystack” comes to mind; BUT,
for something as frequently searched for as The White House it is a wonder that
it wasn’t addressed sooner.
Luckily, Google does
have the power to overrule such offensive, historically charged titles like The
N***** King yet, on an unfortunate note, remains powerless to change the
uncomfortably apt titles that prevail through time, shielded by tradition. God
bless the White House in all its glory. I think if we had a “White House” it’d
be sky blue.
