#HappyBirthdayYouTube – 10 Years of Fail Videos, Nyan Cat and More
The month of May is coming to an end and what better way to round
it off, than with a celebration of one of our favourite social networks?
Ten years ago YouTube launched in beta, so do you know what
that means? Yeah, we’re old…AND we’ve been watching silly videos online for a
whole decade. That’s like... half my lifetime. Duuuude.
To honour the occasion YouTube has been busy releasing bits and bobs throughout the month.
On Thursday, YouTube Spotlight released a mashup of their
favourite videos. It was made up of 75 different video references and involved 18 diverse
film making styles. The gist of the video is to showcase the A-Z of YouTube: starting
with A for Animals like keyboard cat and works its way through the alphabet, past M for Memes with Nyan Cat, W for Weird with Salad Fingers (*shudders*) and finishes with Z for zoo – (bit broad that last one isn’t it YouTube?)
To be fair to YouTube, I think the zoo thing has something to do with YouTube's first ever video!

But wait, that’s not all.
I thought that this catchy 3 minute video and rap would be enough to
celebrate a tenth birthday, but no, no, no. It seems that the celebrations have literally been one month long!
On the 1st of May, YouTube Spotlight also released some playlists. The first of which was titled 'A is for Animals.’ And you guessed it, it is a list of all the top
animal videos on YouTube, featuring Grumpy Cat, that screaming goat we mentioned
earlier, a hamster eating a burrito and so much more.
It’s nearly 20 minutes of
sheer procrastination enhancing cuteness.
Throughout the remainder of the month they brought out
several more playlists of a similar fashion. But it seems likely that most
people missed them. Today seemed like it was the first day that people realised it was YouTube's tenth anniversary.
The videos are definitely worth exploring and watching if
you know, you’re bored or something.
I have also discovered that there are articles on YouTube A to Z on their trendy "trends blog": http://youtube-trends.blogspot.co.uk/
but all of this just seems slightly misplaced.
Like I missed something?
The
blog articles are really interesting too! They have compiled some
shocking statistics and cool facts, for
example, we can learn in the "T for Time lapse" article that more than 4,400 days
(or 12 years) worth of time lapse footage has been uploaded onto YouTube, which
has been viewed nearly 4 billion times in total.
And if you think you’ve nearly learnt it all from the blogs and the videos, then you might just be ready for their quiz: https://youtube10.withgoogle.com/
It’s all really interesting stuff, but I just find it sad that it's only just being
talked about today.
I feel a bit like the party bus has just passed me
by at 120mph without letting me on. I’m sure everyone’s having a great time on
the bus, but the invites just didn’t quite get to us all.
