QuizUp App Becomes a Social Network
So I downloaded QuizUp about a year and a half ago. It was a
glitchy app that crashed a lot, was kind of sluggish but on the whole, it was fun if you liked
trivia and quizzes.
Back then, you simply picked a topic and went head to head
with someone else, anywhere in the world, to see who could answer the
questions correctly in the best time. It was great fun.
There was a huge
selection of topics, you could play against complete strangers (if there was
someone online who happened to want to do that topic too) and you could stare
into their profile pic’s eyes on the loading page before battle commenced. Other than those few seconds of intense hatred, you didn't have any contact with another player.
But like I said, it was ace.

Now I probably deleted the app because you know… new games
came out, not many people wanted to do the topics I was good at and to be
completely honest, Jurassic Park Builder takes up a lot of space and I needed
the extra MBs back.
I had assumed the app had melted into nothingness, so when I
saw that it was turning into a social app rather than a gaming app, well… you
can imagine the shock!
Apparently there are better quiz apps out there, so QuizUp wanted
to do something to make them stand out from the crowd.
Plain Vanilla Games, the app’s developers, claim that nearly
10 marriages have come out of QuizUp (cue the “I’m a QuizUp Baby” rompers).
Because of this rather vague statistic, they have taken
it upon themselves to “emphasize those connections between people, and create a
platform that always revolves around your interests,” that came from Plain
Vanilla’s CEO Thor Fridriksson in his interview with Re/code.
The new version of the app that launched last Thursday features a
news feed for each topic and an overall feed for the user. Just like Facebook you can like and comment on these posts and share your own content! You can play against
your friends and strangers as usual, but now you can add these new strangers into your friends list!
To search for new friends you can edit several filters to
find the perfect match to date... I mean…play quizzes with. You can select
genders, ages, distances and interests. It really is like a dating app, but
with the added element of gaming.
Plain Vanilla are focusing on moving their app up, up and
away. They are working on updating topics regularly and they also plan to partner up with
companies to make more sponsored trivia categories like they did with the Game
of Thrones trivia. The updates have been rolling out to iOS and Android over
the last week and there have even been talks of a web version coming to a PC
near you.
We all have a primal urge to complete quizzes and prove ourselves to complete strangers, but can these competitors ever really become our "friends?" I suppose this app will be the real test, so we'll have to wait and see!
