Apple Vintage Find Worth $200,000
A rare collectible, Apple 1
computer, worth $200,000, was discovered at Clean Bay Area’s e-waste recycling
in Milpitas. Last month, a woman was cleaning out her garage, after her
husband’s death, discarded boxes of electronics at the warehouse in San
Francisco.
Only about 200 of the
first-generation Apple computers were made and only about 63 of those
early machines are said to have survived. The computer has about 4kB of
memory. A modern day MacBook has two million times more memory.

Believing that the boxes
contained nothing of value “She said, ‘No no no, it’s total crap. Just take it
and recycle it,'” recalled Vice President Victor Gichun “She drove away and
didn’t give me any information.” She
didn't even collect the receipt.
Two weeks later, Gichun and
his partner were contacted and alerted of the unusual find by one of Clean Bay
Area's employees. Former biotech engineer, Gichun's partner recognised the
gadget as one of the first generation desktop computers put together by none
other than Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976.
The Vintage computer was
sold to a private collector for $200,000 in cash by Clean Bay Area. A cheap buy
for an Apple 1 computer, last year a working Apple 1 computer was auctioned for
$905,000.
Clean Bay Area have
launched a web and media campaign to track her down so she can receive her half
of the cash they got for the machine. Gichun said kindly "We tried to
find her locally" speaking with local media outlets "I will see her
car and recognise her and give her a $100,000 check".
The mystery woman, who
is said to between 60 - 70 years old, just needs to return to Milpitas donation
centre to collect the money. Mr Gichun told San Jose Mercury News, "To
prove who she is, I just need to look at her."
