Facebook Finally Has GIF Support!
Facebook have finally answered my prayers.
Their most recent update has taken into account society’s
growing obsession with GIFs and is now supporting animated GIF images in the
News Feed.
If you’ve somehow missed the memo on what a GIF is, it’s one
of those hilarious, normally quite sassy, animated images on a loop. They’re
normally taken from popular TV shows, music videos and cartoons. There are at
least 5 pages of GIFs for every situation you find yourself in.
Because I am just so damn happy, I have hidden 5 GIFs in
this article. Let’s see if you can find them. It’s not hard to be honest.
But anyway, back to Facebook.
So the whole of the world is celebrating and giffing all
over the place. We finally have a way to really bring our News Feeds to life.
The only negative I can see coming from this is that it might mean the death of the mighty meme.
The technology behind the GIF-phoria is a little glitchy and
there are few issues. Apparently, the easiest way to share a GIF is by doing it
through sites where the GIF has a share straight to Facebook button. Giphy.com is
good for finding these sorts of GIFs. But apparently this way of sharing GIFs
isn’t totally brand new, so what has Facebook done to get the whole world talking?
You can’t upload it from your desktop because that will just
turn it into a JPEG, i.e. a still image and Facebook haven't opened up their own in-app GIF store...
But what is new and easy, is the way
you can upload a URL link into your status and that will work too! Make sure your
URL ends in .gif though!
I have had a couple of GIFs who refused to work:
whilst they seemed to be working in the draft, the minute I pressed the “post” button the
GIF returned to a still image. But I
have had some success too!
When you use the URL link the GIF should just play on loop
automatically by itself. But if you use the share buttons on websites, then it
will behave like videos. It comes up with a play button and everything, which is a bit obscure and kind of takes away from the giffyness of the
whole thing.
Whilst Facebook definitely have a few things to work on, we’re
all grateful that finally social media is taking a step in the right direction
and getting animated (geddit?) about something! So my pretties, go GIF mad and
spread the giffy goodness.
