Facebook Messenger - Without Facebook?!?
Breaking Free
As part of increased efforts to make their Messenger service the go-to app for mobile communication, Facebook have released an update that allows users in some countries to download and use the app without the need for a Facebook account.recode.net |
This is an update that has needed to happen for a while. Facebook now hosts thousands, if not millions, of blank, unused accounts that exist purely so that their owners can make use of Messenger. By allowing users to bypass the social network it will help to de-clutter their site and services, further streamlining the network.
The move was likely prompted by reports than many users, particularly teens, are starting to drift away from Facebook, preferring to express their opinions and creativity on other apps such as Pinterest and Instagram. Now that a Facebook account is no longer mandatory it may well encourage more people to use the Messenger app alongside other, more favoured social networks.
