Land Rover's James Bond Inspired Remote Control App
Ever since Tomorrow Never Dies hit our screens all those long years ago, gadget-lovers worldwide have been waiting for the day that James Bond's iconic remote control car would become a reality. Much like Back to the Future's Hoverboard, this fictionalised technology gripped the imagination of millions for years to come.
Thanks to UK car manufacturer Land Rover, the wait will soon be over!
Now before we get too carried away, it should be pointed out that you won't be outrunning a hail of gunfire (or anything at all really) with this app, as it is sensibly limited to 4mph in order to ensure safety. The app also incorporates a kill switch, causing the car to break immediately should your hand leave the screen.
The app is instead aimed towards tackling issues more grounded in reality, such as tight parking and difficult terrain. Land Rover's own marketing efforts seem to be more focused on the off-roading side of things, in-keeping with their branding, with their spokesmen heavily promoting the app on the basis of a lone driver going cross-country. The app will allow said driver to effectively act as their own 'spotter', carefully guiding the vehicle around hazards, climbs and steep drops.
The app will also prove useful in situations, as we have all encountered, whereby another vehicle in a car park blocks access to your doors. Utilising the app, you would be able to manoeuvre your vehicle into a more accessible area without the need to climb through the windows. We want Bond, not Dukes of Hazzard.
At the time of writing the app is in its infancy, still going through the rigorous prototype testing phase, but we can hope to see it hit the mainstream within the next few years.
