Twitter Tower - Obama Dethroned by Caitlyn Jenner
guardian.co.uk |
Now more well known as a TV personality and senior member of the bewilderingly super-famous Kardashian clan, Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce Jenner) has been making headlines for weeks following a 20/20 in which she laid bare her status as a transgender woman and the battle with gender dysphoria that she's been waging for almost her entire life. On Monday she revealed her new name alongside a Vanity Fair cover shoot, which revealed the extent of the cosmetic surgery Jenner has been undergoing over the years (she has also been having hormone replacement therapy on and off since the 80s).
The media attention has been absolutely off the charts, the 20/20 interview pulled in 20.7 million viewers and after adopting the new name, she gained 1 million new Twitter followers in 4 hours and 3 minutes, blazing past Obama. At time of writing, she has 1.91 million followers and counting, which of course pales in comparison to the POTIS's grand total, but don't expect the influx to slow down any time soon, she's only Tweeted 3 times thus far under her new moniker.
Another Jenner world record, and at 65? Who'da thought! Humbled & honored to have reached 1M followers in 4 hrs. Thank you for your support.

Beyond just being an amazing achievement to hold an Olympic record and a social media one, the enormous response to Jenner's revelation is a huge victory for transgender representation and awareness. Fellow trans-woman and Against Me! lead singer Laura Jane Grace was particularly supportive of Jenner's ongoing public play-by-play of the transition process, stating that her pre-existing cultural significance will help make people more aware of all the good work being done to improve quality of life for trans people. At 65, Jenner is also paving the way for older people living in the shadow of gender dysphoria who might have previously thought themselves too old to do anything about it. Former boxing promoter Kellie Maloney (60) was met with some pretty harsh criticism along these lines when she came out last year, largely owing to the common misconception that transgender people only 'switch' once they have come out/transitioned. The fact of the matter is, Jenner has essentially always been a woman, it's only now that she's felt ready to tell the rest of the world about it.
