This depressing trend was set in motion by Right Wing News and numerous supporters have adopted and promoted the scheme, but somehow I don't think the 26 million people who used Facebook's gay pride tool have anything to be nervous about. Elsewhere in the unpleasant nightmarescape of the homophobic, outspoken anti-gay Russian politician and general douchelord Vitaly Milonov tried to have Facebook blocked across the nation. "It is a crude violation of Russian legislation. Facebook has no age limits, it is impossible to control how many minors are there," Milonov said, in characteristically awful fashion.
Near as I can figure without actually going to Russia, no such thing has yet happened and it's probably fairly unlikely to. Milonov should just stick to sleeping on planes while lesbians make out in front of him. Third and finally, some conspiracy theorists have suggested that the rainbow flag tool was nefariously intended from the get-go, stating that it was a ploy by Facebook to monitor people and gather digital marketing data.

Facebook aren't above doing that, there's no denying that, but emotionally manipulating people by pretending to show solidarity with them just to figure out whether LGBT supporters are more likely to click a Pepsi ad tips the scale from underhanded to downright evil. I'm pretty sure Facebook aren't evil. Well, reasonably sure. At any rate, Facebook have vehemently denied that they're doing anything of the sort, with a spokesperson stating that "This was not an experiment or test, but rather something that enables people to show their support of the LGBT community on Facebook."

It's worth keeping in mind that this is all minority, peripheral stuff and the vast majority of people are in full support of marriage equality. It's also worth keeping in mind that for the first time in a long time, the homophobic voices in the world are largely impotent and are only getting airplay because of the hilariously moronic ways in which they display their prejudice.
