Facebook is testing a new feature that lets users tag their
friends with a word or phrase that describes their personality or interests.
Spotted first by The Verge, the feature is reminiscent of LinkedIn’s profile
tags, which allow prospective employers to easily see your professional experience and
qualifications. Facebook has confirmed that the feature is being tested in New
Zealand.
A spokesperson for Facebook said in a statement that ‘profile
tags are a creative tool that lets you and your friends add tags to your
profile to highlight the things that describe you and what you’re into.’ The new
feature lets you add tags to your profile or your friends add them for you,
which you must approve before they become visible to everyone. The tags are
free-form, so you can create anything you want, including emojis.

Once a friend adds a tag to your profile you will receive a
notification asking you to accept or decline the tag – so cyberbullies will
have no joy abusing the tool. If you accept the pending tags, they become visible
to everyone; if you decline, they disappear. For the noncommittal among us, they
can be left pending. Your friends can also like your tags, which will appear in
descending order of likes they receive. ‘We believe that friends can also add a
unique perspective to who you are and what makes you special that you may not
even think about putting on your profile,’ said the statement. (It will also
make you feel less of a narcissist if your friends add tags for you.)

As yet it’s unclear if Facebook will make the feature
available to everyone. They want to learn as much as they can from the test
to decide if it will have mass appeal.
