The social media star has turned his online fame into a deal
with the same talent agency that manages Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg, and
Miley Cyrus. The 30-year-old has a radio show on Apple's Beats 1, and brands like
Budweiser and Burger King pay up to $6,000 to advertise on his Instagram
account. His YouTube channel of celebrity interviews and stunts – like teaching
spinning classes to homeless people on parked Citi Bikes in New York City – has over
7,000 subscribers.
But the news of Ostrovsky’s signing has sparked a social
media backlash. Many comedians and others online are criticising him for
aggregating other people’s jokes without properly crediting them. Writer Maura Quint started
the Twitter rage when she tweeted: ‘This man makes nothing, contributes nothing,
originates nothing...Please please please do not support him. He is pure trash.’
Comedian Patton Oswalt retweeted the post, joking: ‘My
favourite Jane’s Addiction song is “Been Caught Aggregating”.’ Brian Redban is one of many others who have started shaming Ostrovsky on Twitter, tracking down the originators of some of his uncredited jokes
and posting them.

But this is not the first time Ostrovsky has been criticised for
using other people’s jokes without crediting the original creator. In one
instance, he claimed ‘I don’t read the internet’ and someone told him the joke.
