Snapchat Update: More Emojis, Less Data
When I first got Snapchat I really thought it would just be a phase. That was the best part of two years ago now.
Yes, perhaps it's true, Snapchat will never reach the same heights that it did during the Great Snapchat Boom of 2013, but it hasn't exactly failed since either.
The app continues to plod on, releasing new updates along the way that keep it competitive against other photo/video sharing platforms.
So, let's take a look at what's new:
On Monday, the update was released to both iOS and Android and with it came a new option called "Travel Mode."
Turn this on and video content will no longer be able to download itself onto your phone automatically. Instead you have to tap to load it and then tap again to watch it, that doesn't take too long, does it?
I didn't even realise that videos were downloading automatically on Snapchat and with the rise in all those global Snapchat "Live Stories" from New York to Cairo, I can see how Snapchat is draining some serious data.
If you go over your monthly data allowance pretty regularly, this could be why and downloading the update could save you some nasty surprises when your bill comes in.
Once you've installed the update you need to make sure you actually enable "Travel Mode."
Tap the ghost in the centre of the screen, at the top. Then go into the settings (the cog/gear) and select "Additional Services." Then under "Manage" there should be an option to toggle "Travel Mode" off and on, it will most likely be pre-set to off right now. Turn that on straight away. Seriously!
So from now on, if you have no Wi-Fi, you will have to tap to load the stories. But I can see the benefit and think of all that extra money for the honeys!
The second big part of the update is that you can use emojis in their millions; if that is the way you wish to roll.
Instead of emojis being in the same field as the text and thus taking up some space in that oh-so-tiny word limit, they are now an asset of their own. Free to be added alongside text or away from the text, the choice is truly yours.
This update makes emojis less like... well emojis... and more like stickers. You aren't restricted on using them across one line, you can literally just "stick" them all over your photo/video.
With more fun to be had, more ways to insert emojis and less costs to worry about, there really is nothing stopping Snapchatters from continuing their Snapchatty endeavours.
Snapchat really is coming together now as a video app and moving away from the social media trend with a massive expiry date that it started out as. But whether it really will last or not, I suppose only time will tell.
