Pinterest Open Their Platform to Developers
TNW |
Pinterest have announced this week that they are opening their APIs to developers in order for them to start creating integration apps. Having already partially opened their doors to pre-approved developers such as Polyvore, Topshop and IFTTT, Pinterest, via the new beta Developers Platform, will now allow creators to access user information such as the types of things have they have pinned.
A software engineer from Pinterest, Zack Argyle, explained the move in the following:-
"Once you’ve read and agreed to our terms and policies, you’ll be able to add a select number of testers and collaborators to help you build your app. After someone authenticates, you’ll get access to their Pins, boards, profiles and follows. If you have the ID of the object, you can retrieve its information—otherwise, you can fetch info for authenticated users."
Since May, Pinterest has received 5,000 ideas for third-party apps including recipe recommendation and travel-planning themes. Polyvore has already detailed the success of their merger, stating that they have seen a 35% increase in traffic from Pinterest.
Whilst the user numbers are substantially lower than more popular platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, Pinterest has the advantage of being more product-central - therefore it's likely to draw a lot of attention for this latest release.
