The John Lewis #OnTheMoon Xmas Ad Will Emotionally Ruin You
The Telegraph |
The advert, which hits screens tonight, has been teased all week with the hashtag #OnTheMoon, as John Lewis strengthen its social media presence by debuting the ad on YouTube rather than TV. The department store will subsequently spread it amongst their social media channels; this makes a change from its usual slot during the X-Factor, as the company recognises that social media "can reach a larger, more targeted audience more quickly online." The £1 million production plays largely on the company's partnership with Age UK and raises issues of loneliness in older people.

Whilst I can't deny that it played on my heart strings, the 2014 advert and the media storm surrounding it left a bad taste in my mouth. We all loved Monty the penguin, but really he was nothing more than a marketing ploy to sell you the 'spirit' of Christmas in the form of a £95 plush toy. That stuffed animal online brought in no less than £18m of revenue for the company. This year's advert makes no exception - #ManOnTheMoon merchandise is bountiful on the retailer's website. Rather disappointingly, with the exception of their Christmas card, the products do not benefit the charity with a donation from the retail price. In conjunction with the ad John Lewis has released a Man on the Moon augmented reality app that allows you to trace the real moon in the sky and receive interesting facts everyday. There is also a game included which allows you to play the paper plane that the little girl in the ad so desperately tries to make reach the man on the moon.
So if you're looking to feel all mushy today, you can watch the advert below. WARNING: Might incite feelings of compassion and inexplicable urges to hug old people.
