Tinder Introduce Job and Education Matching Algorithms

Wired
Tinder seem intent on making the point that they're more than just a swiping hook-up machine. They've fielded a lot of negative criticism recently and they've dealt with it reasonably... Well let's just say they've dealt with it. None of the new additions to the platform have inspired much further confidence, many of them have seemingly over-complicated what was once an appealing simple format, or worse, charged money for it.

Their latest addition might be the most baffling one yet, alongside an improved matching algorithm, they've also added the ability to include work and education information on your profile. Said information is pulled from your Facebook profile, but can be edited somewhat if needs be. It seems to me that one of the first topics of conversation when breaking the ice is asking about work, so you would imagine that already having that information to hand would only make it more difficult to spark the chatter.

What this also enables is a kind of background matching system, which lets you know if you went to the same school, or work for the same company as the person whose profile you're viewing. It certainly seems like a characteristic more indicative of a full-blown social network than a dating app. You can of course opt out of this part of the experience, but Tinder seem confident that before long more profiles will feature this information than not.

The other thing Tinder have tacked on is a more organised messaging area which splits the inbox into ongoing conversations and new matches. This one is fair easier to understand, and the effectiveness of the new match algorithm remains to be seen, but the benefit of including a work and educational background might be a bit harder to quantify. Certainly if you're in the market for a partner with lots of money, it will be easier to ferret them out, rather than trawling their pictures to see what brand of watch they're wearing.
