Wrong #MissUniverse Announced, Twitter Goes Crazy
Daily Mail |
The pageant, held in Las Vegas, saw poor Miss Columbia inadvertently crowned in the place of Miss Phillipines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbac, the real winner. In some of the most awkward scenes known to social media, Miss Colombia is ceremoniously dethroned, diamond crown and all, while Miss Philippines looks on in stunned, but delighted, awe. Miss Columbia had celebrated her victory for a good three minutes before the host took to the stage to reveal the blunder. "Folks, I have to apologize," said Harvey. "The first runner-up is Colombia," he announced whilst turning his results card to the camera.
The whole debacle has seen social media light up with shock, confusion and, of course, parody - Twitter has seen the topic trending with over 4m tweets so far.
I feel so sorry for Miss Colombia. Steve Harvey's mistake was disgusting. #MissUniverse

And in one of the most prime examples of digging yourself into a hole, Harvey immediately took to
Twitter post-show to apologise for the terrible confusion - misspelling both contestants' countries in the process. "I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippians and Miss Columbia [sic]".
He then deleted the tweet and re-wrote it, saying he felt terrible and apologized "wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines" for his "huge mistake". Jeez, Steve Harvey. Perhaps you should have just stuck to Family Feud.
