#China's Latest Bizarre #SocialMedia Trend is called #CarryPenUnderBreast
Another trend has crossed the globe from China, and I'm seriously starting to worry for the health of young women everywhere.
The trend that began on China's social network Weibo is all about proving your womanhood. It's a simple idea. Shove a pen beneath your bosom: if it falls to floor you should hide in shame and if it sticks there, take a photo and put it on social media. I can't even begin to understand this.
Last time we touched on a similar subject to this we learnt that young, impressionable, Chinese women will find any way to prove themselves as the skinniest/most attractive people on social media.
We've seen the collarbone challenge, the belly button challenge, the Taylor Swift inspired leg challenge and now.. the (prepare yourself for a shockingly creative hashtag) #carrypenunderbreast challenge...
Chinese girls genuinely believe that if you can hold a pen with the almighty strength of your under-boob then you are a "true woman."
So that means flat chested, nay, average chested women are no longer "true women" and there's nothing we can do about it. Chinese social media has spoken.
This trend isn't actually a new thing. Any girl who went through adolescence probably heard about the dreaded "pencil test." Particularly for any of those who read Angus, Thongs & Full Frontal Snogging - this test will be familiar.
Back in 2004 I sat with burning cheeks in the PE changing rooms as I realised I had no chance of completing the pencil test anytime in the next 5 years. I really thought that it would all be over soon and I would never have to do the test again. But it's back and it's a harder pill to swallow this time.
I'm not saying it was more acceptable in 11 - 13 year old girls. But in a way, it was understandable. Young girls discovering their bodies and comparing - that's almost what adolescence is for. Plus, they're young and immature, they don't have much to think about other than their ever changing bodies.
But 20 something year olds doing the same test is just a little embarrassing and proves very little apart from the fact that you're insecure/desperate enough that you'll put nearly naked photos of yourself on social media in order to get likes and prove yourself as a "real woman..."
I see this trend as a perfect excuse to make less "curvy" people (or those that can't afford breast augmentations) feel bad about themselves. Again. It's a horrible trait in humanity that we feel the need to make one rule which can decide whether you're "real" / "beautiful" or not.
The race goes on and on at #carrypenunderbreast. Some women are pushing the boat out and shoving larger objects into their sweaty crevices to prove how "hot" they are. And that purple fleece sure is steamy.
I just don't get it.

I think it's sad that these girls do this. Chinese pop culture is saying that anyone with smaller breasts than the ones above are not true women and not beautiful.
What's next?
