Facebook's Virtual Reality Headset is Here: The Oculus Rift
The heavily anticipated arrival of the Facebook owned virtual reality headset has arrived. Here is everything you need to know!
Pre-orders are now open for the consumer Oculus Rift headset. The price is set at a whopping $599/£499/AU$649 and the first orders will be arriving on March 28th.
There have been some concerns that the price is a bit steep for a piece of tech in its early days, particularly when the predicted cost was only $350/£240. But don't fret, for this price you will also get two VR games (EVE: Valkyrie & Lucky's Tale), an Xbox One Controller and wireless receiver, an Oculus Remote, Sensor & a very smart little case to keep it all in. Figures suggest that very few have actually been deterred by the cost so far.
"Pre-orders are going much better than I ever could have possibly expected," says the founder of Oculus, Palmer Luckey, "I can't talk about numbers, but we sold through in 10 minutes what I thought we were going to sell through in a few hours."
On Reddit, Luckey has said he plans to make VR affordable, "I still want to make VR cheap, functional, and disruptive, but it takes a certain amount of quality to do that." But in the meantime he seems set at keeping the price for the Rift headset where it is, and why shouldn't he? In an age where consoles and games are going up and up in price, it is unsurprising that ground breaking tech will be welcomed with open arms and a willingness to pay as much as required.
Next month a more expensive package will be available for pre-order which includes a computer too. At just a mere $1,499/£1,030, who could say no?
The whole development of the Rift will open up so many doors for gamers and Facebook alike. It has been estimated that 12.2 million VR headsets will be sold in 2016 alone, which could add up to an additional revenue of around $2 billion for Facebook stocks.
With Luckey being optimistic and Facebook being... well... Facebook, I'm sure this venture is going to be a massive, massive success.
